French regions have individual histories, distinctive cuisines, characters and cultures. This mixture has continued to fascinate and attract millions of tourists every year. Anyone who has visited France understands why it leads other countries as an international tourism destination. Among those who arrive, a growing number elect a slow traveling mode by staying longer in a particular location. For these visitors letting on vacation is a preferred option.

As was indicated in statistics released by UNWTO, 2012 would be a banner year for tourists with a billion travelers for the very first time. In the prior year, 982 million tourists were tabulated. Europe has remained the most visited part of the world and France its leading destination with over 79 million visitors.

A record of 467 million tourists in 2012 was counted between the first six months by UN WTO. It is known that foreign tourism is at a peak during July and August, while 45 percent of tourists travel within first 6 months of a given year. The new data for 2012 indicated that the count in 2011 would be surpassed.

The country has 22 regions and 96 departements or county level units of government. Fabulous architecture, world famous cuisine and wine, its beautiful landscape steeped in history is a constant draw for visitors from afar. The rugged coastline of Brittany, spectacular scenery and medieval villages of the Dordogne, the mountains of the Alps or the sunny sophistication of the French Riviera reflect a regional diversity that keeps travelers coming back for more.

Places to rent offer a diversity sure to satisfy all tastes. An attractive lodging option is waiting to be let whatever your preference. Self catering farmhouses, cottages, manor houses, villas and apartments in cities are among rental selection types on offer. A holiday rental will typically rent from one Saturday to the other. Rentals are let for one week periods normally. Lodging will be supplied with whatever necessities are required for such stays. Normally, food is not included. Renters may receive a welcome food package on their arrival. But this is not customary. Cleaning is often done before new renters arrive and after their departure.

When you decide where you want to visit, it is wise to check out any accommodation reviews, if available, to get an idea of what to expect. Of course, careful research will improve chances of a satisfactory visit. Normally, partial payments in advance are due on booking. Full payment may be required one or two months prior to arrival. Cancellations are not normally accepted at the last minute.

Most travelers arrive in summer months. Tourism in this period runs from June through September. July and August are peak travel periods. Winter tourists who arrive for skiing come between December of one year and April of succeeding year. Peak travel period during winter is from December to January.

Selfcatering accommodations in rural France are generally known as gites. They are an attractive option as they are cheaper for a holiday than a hotel and are more comfortable than tents or mobile homes. Commonly, such lodgings are a traditional renovated cottage or a converted barn. These originally would provide only most rudimentary of comforts. However, the gite concept has become more comfortable and luxurious today. In most cases, especially if marketed abroad, quality housing should be expected. There are places available to suit any budget and to accommodate diverse tastes. To make an optimal selection from a growing array of offerings has complicated matters in a nice way.
