One of the largest known reptiles in Louisiana and in US at large is the alligator. These reptiles have a population that is approximated to be 1.4 million. Commercial farms produce much of these kinds of reptiles. The hunting in Louisiana is done in the month of September of every year. The Wildlife and Fisheries department in the city has the mandate to set the date to go for hunting. The experience becomes more enjoyable if the hunter has guided gator hunting in Louisiana.

Licensed hunters are the only people allowed to go hunting in the habitats. They are supposed to possess or lease a land classified as wetland habitat. The owners are issued with harvest tags by the Department of Wildlife. The qualified hunters are given guides and accompanied throughout their trips.

The non-resident hunters who have leased or owned land in the city use Hunter Licenses and are mostly accompanied by guides who have valid tags. They aid them in accessing the best habitats on the marshes. They are able to take you to the unsurpassed habitats with the biggest catch. In these habitats, one can get an 8 feet long catch also known as the trophy alligator. Harvest tags should be put on them. Taxidermy is not incorporated in cost of trip.

The trips are offered with or without overnight lodging. Some guiding companies take hunters on day hunts while others may take them for night hunts. The weekend hunts sometimes may include overnight camping like in Yellow Bayou camp. However, there are other lodging services at every hotel in the city. Tanning services are not mostly included in cost of the trip. Any hunting trip offered at Wildlife Lodge and Grosse Savanne Waterfowl includes accommodations for overnight trips. Provost Adventures in LA offer trips for hunters only.

Orientations are made before any hunt is made. The animal may be harvested during either sunrise or sunset only. The daily allowance is the same as the tags that the hunter has. Hunters are not restricted to any size of reptile to hunt. The reptiles may be harvested by use of bow and arrow, hook and line and firearms. Shotguns are however not permitted in the process.

Non-residents can harvest the reptile as a sport hunter while escorted by the guide. The person escorting the hunter must possess all the valid tags. The non-resident can also obtain the tags on the land or habitat as long as they provide the relevant information in documents concerning the ownership of land.

The licenses issued to non-residents are a bit low than that issued to the residents. This license is known as Sport Hunter licenses. Louisiana is well known for its breeding of alligators in US and in the whole world. Hunters harvest up to over 30,000 wild gators yearly while alligator farmers hit over 280,000.

Gators hides can be sold to licensed fur dealers or buyers at the market. Sometimes, the reptiles are sold in whole to the fur dealers at processing industries in LA where they manufacture various products. The other buyers can plan to get meat, skin, and the other parts of the trophy from the sellers in the habitats. The Gator Management Program has recorded an alarming rise in production of gators at the swamps and marshes of coastal region of the city.
