South America is the stuff of dreams. If you want to feel like a real life Indiana Jones or Dr Doolittle this is the direction to head in. A Galapagos and Machu Picchu tour is the best way to enjoy two of the most important places in the world.

The Galapagos archipelago lies about 400 kilometers off the coast of Ecuador. Charles Darwin made the islands famous when he wrote about them in his theory of evolution. The animals and birds he saw there were so different from anything he had seen anywhere else they convinced him that his theory must be true.

The park has to enforce strict rules to protect the animals as sometimes they are so inquisitive they will approach visitors. There are lots of islands in the group so it is best to take a cruise on a boat so that you can take in everything on offer. Cruises usually last around a week and visit a range of islands with different things to see on each.

The area is now a national park and the authorities have put strict rules in place to protect the flora and fauna. Access is limited so it is far easier to take an organized tour than to try and travel there independently. There are a number of different styles and sizes of boat to choose from with the largest carrying about one hundred passengers. Most of the tours take in a range of islands so that passengers get to see the full variety of animals available so the main things to consider are price and comfort.

Ecuador also has incredible things to see on the mainland. The capital city Quito is a World Heritage site with beautiful colonial buildings. There are lots of volcanoes, glaciers, pristine cloud forest and beautiful jungle.

Just south of Ecuador is Peru, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Exploring the ruins and cultural exhibits from one of the most innovative Pre-Colombian civilizations is a trip of a lifetime. The best sites, including Machu Picchu are high in the Andes mountains, a place of stunning natural beauty.

The Inka people are admired for their skills in architecture. The site has a number of palaces, an observatory, incredible water systems and mind boggling carved stones. Archaeologists are still puzzling over how people with limited technologies managed to create these wonders. In Cusco there is a new museum which has artifacts recovered from the first excavations of the city.

Other attractions in the area include the Sacred is littered with archaeological sites. There are adventure tour companies offering rafting, climbing, hiking and paragliding. Cultural activities include museums, textiles, community visits and gastronomic tours.

Visiting two of the most impressive destinations in the world in one trip is an incredible opportunity. Using a good tour operator will save you tons of hassle. Their local knowledge will prove invaluable and make your experience truly special.
