A trip to the US Virgin Islands is just not complete without spending time on St John shore excursions. This amazing island may be small but it certainly has plenty to do. At only sixteen square miles it is actually the smallest of the islands and over two thirds of it has been designated a national park.

Despite its small size St John is an island with a lot to offer. Designated as a national park, development has been kept to a minimum. This means the beautiful natural landscape is really what the visitors are coming to enjoy. A tour of the island usually takes about two hours and can be taken by taxi. The drivers are very fun and friendly. They also have plenty of local knowledge and this really makes the tour extra special.

Some people opt to rent a Jeep and drive around by themselves. This is also a fun way to enjoy the amazing scenery and views. The island is home to a population of around three thousand five hundred residents. Many of them work in the tourist industry and do a great job taking care of the visitors. They can give recommendations on the best restaurants and directions to the best beaches.

The colonial history in the Caribbean is fascinating. Visitors can still tour the old Danish sugar plantation known as the Annaberg Ruins. They will learn all about life in colonial times, including the sad history of slavery in area. Guides will show them all about colonial cooking and life on the plantation.

Exploring the beaches is really a must on St John. The trade winds provide enough breeze to ward off intense heat. The waters are warm and perfect for swimming. The sand is almost white in many places and the perfect place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Many people also try snorkeling and scuba diving with an experienced instructor.

One place that most people consider a must is the beach at Trunk Bay. There is a unique underwater snorkeling trail with plaques to show the visitors all about the diverse marine life of the area. The more adventurous many want to head out further and try some diving. It is a good idea to book ahead and secure all the equipment and a knowledgeable local guide.

One of the highlights of any tour is a stop at the Annaberg Ruins. This is the remains of an eighteenth century Danish sugar plantation. Visitors can see how life was for both the colonial family and the slaves. Guides escort the visitor around the plantation and show them some traditional native cooking.

The choice and diversity of St John shore excursions is outstanding. Visitors should plan ahead to make the most of their time on this island paradise.
