As the drive winds along this spectacular twisting road, natural splendor is visible on all sides. The roadway passes through waterfalls, rainforests, bamboo forests and tall cliffs. Paia, Wailua Falls, the Keanae Valley Lookout, Kaumahina and Wai'anapanapa State Parks and Puaa Kaa will keep picture takers busy.

Beaches for windsurfing, the Oheo Stream and Pools and other places invite quick dips. Many waterfalls and trails entice travelers to investigate them. If the weather is hospitable and time is not an issue, numerous distractions are available throughout the day. The serene beauty of this side of Maui offers a refreshing atmosphere. Between Keanae and Kaupo is the final destination. Ten miles beyond its outskirts to the south lies Haleakala National Park, which is situated in Kipahulu. Here are the well known Pools of Oheo. On this site, water enters the sea after spilling into tiered pools from a waterfall. The Pipiwai Trail promises an invigorating hike for the adventurous up to the Waimoku Falls. These waterfalls are 400 feet high. Before the advent of Europeans, the area had a large native population.
