Going Away on Vacation? Be Certain Your Home is Burglar Proof

Vacations are a great time to relax and recharge your batteries. Having this special time with your family is something that of us treasure during our lives, and it is essential for family bonding. Unfortunately, it's also a perfect time for a break-in. Are there ways to make yourself more safe from this?

During your absence, a trusted neighbor looking in from time to time is a good idea, if you will be away a while. Nothing like piled up mail or newspapers to signal an empty house.

If your indoor and outdoor lights are set to go on and off at certain times, it will appear that you are there, reducing the chances of break ins. Or have a neighbor turn lights on or off when checking on your home.

A professional home alarm system should be installed to help reduce the odds of burglars. Having a sign on your property indicating that there is an alarm is a good deterrent. The sign might make a burglar think twice about trying to get inside your house. Only go with a company who has a good reputation and stands behind it. If you choose to try to fool thieves with fake alarms, they are savvy and know the difference. For maximum security, alarms fitted with cameras allow you to view your home from your computer.

Let a little light through a small slit in your curtains, but keep them closed so no one can see inside. For only a few hours, it's still wise to leave something on like the radio, to fool thieves into believing a person is there.

If you hide a key outside for a spare, it's not wise, do not do it. A smart thief can find the key, and then you let them inside your home easily. And make sure your keys are hidden away. Ensure that your mail slot has a cage on it. Burglars sometimes will use something to reach through the slot, and attempt to pull nearby keys outside. When a burglar gets your keys, they can use them to get other things such as your vehicle, which is handy to transport your belongings away with them.

Make sure all your doors and windows are locked. It happens a quite often where a door is left unlocked, and a thief just strolls right in easily and makes away with your valuables. If you leave the door unlocked, the best made locks will do nothing to protect you. Even when you are going for a moment, lock your door because a dangerous criminal could enter your home. Install deadbolt locks. Sliding doors have their own kind of locks, but for all other types of doors, use the 2 locks that are there, one on the doorknob, and ensure there is also a deadbolt.

Don't have your name displayed on your house or mailbox. Getting a phone number is easier when the name is known, and they can find out if you are home by making a simple phone call. If you choose to use Facebook, do not tell everyone on the planet know that you'll be away for a month, and be sure not to say it on your outgoing phone message either. Save your social media postings for when you return from your vacation.

Make sure you have enough insurance on your home just in case. The thing you should be focusing on when on a vacation is unwinding and being peaceful and happy with those you care about. To follow some of these tips could save you a huge headache when you get back after your vacation.
