Enjoying San Diego Has Many Advantages

San Diego makes a superb Californian destination, boasting surf, sun and fun. For couples, singles and families, this Pacific ocean hotspot has an historic Spanish feel. Without LA's hype and traffic, it's a great place to chill on golden beaches, take in all the attractions and receive great southern hospitality and cuisine.

Just thirty kilometers north of Mexico's border, San Diego is the deep south and west of America's mainland with a stunning climate. With all year round sunshine, it has more than 200 days above seventy degrees Fahrenheit every year. As a beach holiday spot, places don't get better than San Diego.

There's so much to do like, surfing, reliving Top Gun moments at Coronado or enjoying the nightlife of California's second biggest city. There are fifteen beaches, from those with all the attractions to more deserted, wild stretches of clean sand where you can find your own space. Surfers flock to Black's and Pacific Beach.

Here are a few tips for a perfect vacation. Accommodation is obviously a key decision; luckily there are choices for every budget. For 5-star treatment, check out the Andaz, Hilton, Hyatt and Hotel Palomar plus a handful of others. Those who seek resorts should look at the Grand Del Mar which is based in a lovely coastal canyon. The Loews Coronado Bay Resort and Spa is right on the Pacific, offering waterfront luxury.

Those vacationing with a smaller budget have many choices available. There are hundreds of motels, B&Bs and guesthouses. Several cheaper places in the city are highly recommended for all. The Day's Inns, Best Westerns and Misson Bay Comfort Inn number amongst those. For a downtown boutique hotel in the Little Italy district, La Pensione hotel has a well-deserved reputation. It's often acclaimed as one of the best.

Where you stay is key, as San Diego is relatively big. A lot depends on how you want to spend time. In the north are Mission Bay and Pacific Beach; Coronado in the centre is a long sand spit creating a natural harbor bay behind. South of the city is Imperial Beach. Lots of holidaymakers head north, further from downtown, airports and military bases.

Whilst staying here, there are certain must-sees. San Diego Zoo, made famous in Madagascar, is a certain one. One of the world's best zoos, it's west off Highway 5 near Balboa Park. Or head to Miramar, famous from the movie Top Gun and base for today's Marine Corps Air Station. Take the road bridge to wealthy Coronado to sun yourself on the sands, with a spectacular mountain backdrop. Head across the waves, dolphin spotting.

San Diego makes a great setting for exploring the many delights of south California. Los Angeles and Hollywood can be reached via a scenic coastal drive just two hours to the north. Joshua Tree National Park lies only three hours away inland. The Sierra Nevada and desert are right behind you and reached by an easy enough drive. The city is laid back, exciting and a great place for your vacation, especially if a bit of peace and quiet on some of the world's finest beaches happens to be your idea of relaxation.
