A Quick Guide to Package the Ultimate Hand Luggage

When planning for a flight with hand luggage, be sure to do your research in advance. All flights have restrictions on the size of the bags you can take on board, so check your airlines' guidelines. Most airlines allow passengers to carry between 5kg and 10kg in their hand luggage, and bags must be fairly slim line - often no more than 20cm deep. It may not sound like much, but it leaves plenty of room for much more than a beach towel, swimsuit and some sun cream.

There are a few airlines that are more liberal with their luggage allowance. More often than not, wheelie bags offer a better volume to size ratio than rucksacks, but there's not much in it if you aren't taking rigid items, like shoes. But beware, keep to the regulations - all carriers warn that they'll add your extra baggage to the hold at the gate and you'll incur a hefty charge!

All airports now check that passengers only have one small sealable bag made from transparent plastic to store their on-board toiletries. Since 2006, European countries have enforced strict legislation on carrying liquids on planes. Bottles can only contain 100ml or less as rules are so strict. Larger bottles are not permitted either, even if there's only 100ml of liquid left in them.

Before flying, decant your favourite toiletries into smaller bottles, or buy mini tubes of toothpaste. If you want to be able to spritz your signature scent on holiday, you can also find little atomisers.

If you're off to sunnier climes, remember to pack miniature bottles of sun cream or check if you can buy any at your destination. Most English-focused resorts like Torremolinos do stock the usual lotions, but others might not have the factor or brand that you normally use. Moisturiser and after-sun lotion are also a good idea if you are going on a beach break.
