With the love and support of our family, doing things seem easier. They help make holiday celebrations more fun, and they offer comfort when we go through hard times. But there are things that seem more difficult to do if they are all together, and shooting a family portrait is one of those things. It may be fun if everyone is present, but they also make up the most energetic of crowds, making it difficult for a photographer to shoot their picture as a group. It's not advisable to skip it though, since a family portrait is deemed a valuable heirloom that can be passed on from one generation to the next.

Plan it in detail, that's the secret to taking a family portrait, particularly if you have a large family. It's significant that the family is complete in the photo so you would need to inform everyone the schedule in advance. If not, some aunts or uncles might not be able to make it in a short time. If there's a family celebration coming up, like the anniversary or birthday of the head of the family or the grandparents, you can hold the photo shoot on the same day. Everybody would have made time for the party so there is a good chance that they would be there. And it is also likely that everyone will be in a jolly mood, which is perfect for the photo.

For a Classic family portrait, ask everyone to dress in their best dress or suit. You can also ask them for suggestions for a themed portrait photography. Perhaps you can all put on national costumes or dress in a particular colour. Although there are no rules on what the family should wear during their portrait photo shoot, many families choose to dress in coordinated clothes to show that they are united as a family. Furthermore, dressing up in costume can be exciting for the whole family.

Keep in mind that seniors and youngsters will be present so make sure that the setting for the pictorial, whether it's in a photographer's studio or someplace else, is comfortable for all. To keep everyone looking fresh in the photo, hold the photo shoot first before doing any activity.

Family members have different characters. And even though everyone is dressed in the same way or is told to smile for the camera at the same time, their personality will still shine through in the photos. So don't worry if some members didn't smile as flawlessly as the others, or others even forgot to do so. After all, a family portrait should show the personality of the members because that's what makes it perfect.
