Best Resorts for Nightlife in Crete and the Mediterranean

Crete is often labelled a party island - and it's not without due cause. Most visiting tourists are looking to paint the town red as soon as the sun sets and all of the main resorts have outrageously popular nightspots.

One of the most popular destinations on the island is definitely the capital, Heraklion Town, loved for its thriving bars and nightclubs. The towns popularity does however mean it gets a little crowded in peak season. If you head down to the area around the harbour you will almost certainly find there's something going on. You can have a late and leisurely dinner and still be out in plenty of time to catch most of the excitement.

Ayia Napa is the best known of all the party resorts in Cyprus and its popularity has been increasing every summer since the 70s. With the vibrant clubs here staying open until 4am it is no surprise that crowds from neighbouring towns flock over to join in the dancing. In nearby Protaras the crowd is generally more mature meaning closing times of venues are much earlier, but it is only a bus ride away from lively Ayia Napa.

For a relaxed night on the town in Turkey, try following the locals' example. Focused more on laid-back entertainment than energetic drinking and dancing, many head to a 'meyhane' - a traditional bar where local mezze and copious amounts of raki are served, accompanied by a folk concert. The Veli - reputed to be Bodrum's oldest bar - is a popular spot for just such a night out.

For an evening of class on the Costa Blanca, start your night at Torrevieja's Casino Cultural Society, just an hour's drive south of Alicante. Housed in a Moorish building along the seafront, you can visit this members' club for tours and drinks. If this gives you a taste for gambling, try your luck at the modern casino located on the road between Benidorm and Vollajoyosa. Though not quite as fancy as the Casino Cultural Society, you are still sure to have a great night.
