"Ain Kerma (fig source) smala Tiaret in Algeria", oil on canvas, 1867, Gustave Guillaumet (1840-1887). Guillaumet arrived in Algeria in 1862. "He contracted malaria and had to spend three months in a military hospital in Biskra. Nevertheless, excited by this country, going back nine times. His early works are inspired melodramatic. Early as 1872, it shows the existence sad monotonous and miserable desert populations with whom he shared life. Avoiding European civilization, he preferred to travel in southern Algeria. ".
